Port Logistics Group (PLG) welcomes Ryan D. Powell as Senior Vice President (SVP) of Whiplash. Powell will lead Whiplash through its next growth phase where creating a seamless customer experience for direct-to-consumer (D2C) fulfillment has taken on new urgency in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to eMarketer, U.S. consumer ecommerce sales growth will surge to 18 percent to $709.78 billion in 2020, the highest on record since the company began calculating the metric in 2008.
Powell brings a wealth of operations and sales experience to PLG following positions at tech and fulfillment startups. Prior to joining the company earlier this summer, Powell’s most recent position was Head of Revenue at a cloud-based shipping and fulfillment solutions provider where he established the company’s U.S. operations, rapidly growing sales into a multi-million-dollar business unit.
As SVP, Whiplash, Powell is tasked with enhancing PLG’s ecommerce fulfillment capabilities through software with features that match the customer’s expectation for a seamless customer experience, growing company revenue through strategic technology partnerships and new merchant relationships while supporting the merchants PLG already partners with.
All of these areas are important to continue to expand PLG’s capabilities as the go-to leader in retail logistics and D2C fulfillment. Powell noted, “Merchants and retailers more than ever need logistics partners who focus on technology with outstanding warehouse capabilities.”
The past few years have seen technology companies offering decent front-end technology while trying to learn warehouse operations. This creates an environment where merchants need to look for new partners as they outgrow the capabilities of their current 3PL. “Port Logistics Group powered by Whiplash removes this concern so merchants with 50,000 SKUs and 300,000 orders a month or 1 SKU and 500 orders a month are covered with the same exacting service standards,” Powell said.
Powell is guiding the talented Whiplash team as it develops comprehensive, scalable solutions which not only focus on the Whiplash core of serving D2C brands but will also give expanded omnichannel capabilities to retailers and brands—think D2C and wholesale/retail housed within a single source of truth. The end goal is to provide a simple, yet powerful, front-end with world class back-office operational support.
Since PLG completed its acquisition of Whiplash in April of 2019, the synergies between the two companies have proven to be the right combination as more commerce moves online and as retailers expand their omnichannel capabilities to meet “channel shifting,” including making BOPIS (buy online, pickup in store), curbside pickup and easier returns a permanent part of retail.
PLG is poised to continue being the best-in-class fulfillment partner for all brands, merchants and retailers, regardless of size and audience.
At its heart, Whiplash is a technology company and its pairing with the PLG management team’s decades of operational experience in gateway and retail logistics, along with a footprint of warehouses and fulfillment centers throughout the U.S., rounds out the company’s capabilities to serve brands and retail supply chains end to end.
“If you are omnichannel with wholesale-retail requirements in addition to ecommerce D2C, a traditional wholesale-retail, or an D2C first brand, Port Logistics Group is the no-brainer choice to be your true fulfillment partner that supports you every step of the way,” Powell concluded.
